Lubrin Pueblo
Apartment Castallico is within easy walking distance of the charming and delightful Andalucian village of Lubrin in the province of Almeria. The village is very Spanish and nestles high in the Sierra Los Filabres some 2000 feet above the well known beach resorts of Mojacar and Garrucha which are just 45 minutes away.

Lubrin is a small village of about 500 of the nicest people you are ever likely to meet. There are a number of Cafe/Bars that offer Tapas. Meson Molinos is a restaurant offering fine wines and a mouthwatering menu. Bar Lopez is located in Rambla Aljibe, which is one of the dozen or so hamlets in the Parish of Lubrin, where you can get a good wholesome 3 course Menu del Dias including wine for about 10 Euros

There are 3 Banks and the village shops include 2 Supermarkets, 3 Butchers, 3 Bakers (no Candlestick Makers!!) and an Ironmongers. You can buy anything from a pin to a Porsche( well not quite a Porsche). Market day is on a Wednesday when you can stock up with fresh fruit and vegetables on most days the fresh fish van comes up from the coast.

Life in Lubrin is a time warp and will remind us more senior citizens of an early childhood where family groups sit out on the streets on hot summer nights with children playing until the sun sets over the hill.

Where to go and what to do!
Lubrin is located about 1 hour cross country from Almeria Airport or 2 hours motorway/cross country from Alicante or Murcia Airports. The village is very Spanish and nestles high in the Sierra Los Filabres some 2000 feet above the well known beach resorts of Mojacar and Garrucha which are just 45 minutes away.

The more Spanish resorts of San Juan Torres and Aquilas (to the North) and Carboneras, Agua Marga and San Jose ( to the South) are about an hour away. These Spanish resorts, in Summer, are very much less crowded, especially mid-week, than Mojacar and Garrucha.

Places of Interest include Cuevas de Almanzora for its cave houses and Tabernas for its magnificent Desert National Park. At Tabernas is a Westen Theme park on the site of the Clint Eastwood Movies!

The Cabo de Gata National Park is one of the most beautiful and ecologically rich coastal strips in the western Mediterranean and is the first Natural land and sea park in Andalucia. The drive takes just over an hour and the route down the mountain, via Nijar, is very dramatic. The park offers walks on marked trails and tracks amongst native scrub and grasses, amidst the scent of wild lemon balm and the distinctive aromas of curry plant and herbs. You are able to follow inland trails and coastline.

The ancient Andalusian city of Almeria(1 hour away)lies sheltered at the base of a bay, proudly dominated by the amazing Alcazaba, a huge Moorish citadel with three walled enclosures dating from 995. From the citadel visitors have a good view of the city’s most impressive and important Christian monument, the Cathedral, dating from 1524, designed more like a fortress than a church because of the need to defend it from pirate attacks. The Cathedral contains numerous art treasures, including a tabernacle dating from the 18th century, designed by Ventura Rodriguez. With its interesting medieval architecture, Almeria’s old town is a delight to stroll through with its tranquil squares, archways and colonnades. The city also has a fascinating archaeological museum and unique cave dwellings in the hillside above the old gypsy quarter.

The Alhambra in Granada is a very popular place to visit by our guests. It takes just 2 hours to drive to Granada along the Almeria to Seville motorway with stunning views. The motorway skirts around Granada and the Alhambra car park is easily accessed. There is a shuttle bus that takes you from the Alhambra direct to the Plaza de Nueva where it’s a short walk to the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.

Transfers from Almeria ( any time) and Alicante Airport (arrivals before 11.30am Departures after 10.30am)

Wonderful experience, charming and clean accommodations and great hiking. Both the property owner John and the manager Paul were a pleasure to deal with. Paul was exceptionally helpful and attentive - pointed us to several interesting places to visit and helped arrange car rental. Highly recommended.

Needed to work on my thesis and was looking for somewhere I could work with a view, close to a small town for food and with a variety of hiking routes on the doorstep. This place met all those expectations. The photos provide accurate representation of the rooms and the surrounding landscape. As I was staying over a week and not seeking to explore wider than the immediate vicinity the owner kindly offered a transfer to and from the airport which was much appreciated. The weather was at times cold whilst I was there so was appreciative of the central heating and the wood-burning stove, not something I'd thought about or checked when looking for accommodation. The kitchen was small but equipped with the essentials and there were was a welcome set of provisions provided, a nice gesture. I bought a few staples enroute via a stop at the supermarket. There are some small shops in town (sell milk, cheese, time, wine, oil) but if you've missed market day (wednesday) and like me, are without a car, stocking up on fruit and fresh vege till next market day is important. The walks were great, I loved the western one. I found a beautiful route just behind the property that gets you up high with a vista pretty quickly -nice for a sundowner or to clear the head. Can imagine this place would be great for couples, friends that enjoy hiking and those traveling solo like looking to relax and immerse into Spanish rural life. Wi-Fi worked fine throughout my visit. My slight marking down on equipment was the DVD TV which seemed to stop DVDs playing about 2/3 the way in and the oven which I couldn't get to stay alight. Suspect there's a knack to it, instructions would be helpful. The gas hob worked fine so it didn't impinge on the experience. Reply from John I am pleased that Cortijo Fuente Arriba ticked the major boxes. Sorry about the DVD player and if the onsite manger had known about the problem he could have replaced the DVD player with a spare one. Again the manager would have been happy to assist with the oven which works perfectly but when lighting, the oven knob has to be held in for 10seconds before releasing. This is a standard safety feature.

We had a lovely 5 days at the property. John and Mair could not have been more helpful. It is in a delightful spot. the weather was lovely, including the thunder storm! We went on the 4 walks that John had supplied. They were interesting, although I think in all of them there is some road walking, but this is unavoidable. The town of Lubrin is interesting. We shopped for food the local stores. It is useful to know when they are open. Market day is on Wednesday and it was good to get some fresh fruit and veg. One night we ate in a local bar and they were serving early evening rather than late as we have come to expect in Spain. At nightime it is extremely dark, so we had some really good sleep! We were sorry to leave.

A very pleasant place to stay - Very relaxing; win a peaceful location with great opportunities for walking in the area, well supported by clear guides/instructions. The accommodation is comfortable and clean and we appreciated the welcome, friendliness and responsiveness of Alberto & Dorotka. It was great to have the space in front of the apartment to sit and read, barbecue and admire the view and the flowers. The village of Lubrin is interesting, picturesque and unspoilt. We enjoyed trying various tapas in bars in the village but noticed that one bar and a restaurant had recently closed down so possibilities for eating out seemed a little more limited than we had anticipated. For this reason we wished we had stocked up more on fresh fruit and vegetables on route, although the Wednesday market provided ample opportunity to make up for this!

We had a very relaxing stay at the apartment. The owner provided clear directions for walks from the door - we found them enjoyable and easy to follow. As it was spring, the wildflowers were coming out and we had ample time for enjoying the views and bird watching before returning to the village for tapas and then back to the cortijo to enjoy the sun on the terrace. We enjoyed shopping in the village, especially the bakery pains au chocolat, and the Wednesday market. At the time we were there, the two restaurants were not operation, but there were three tapas bars to choose from, all reasonably priced with no tourist premium! There is another restaurant a short drive away. We chose to self cater and had done a supermarket shop on the way in, as the choice of fresh produce in the village was limited until market day, but supplemented this with the small local supermarkets.
